The Terme di Casciana is a wellness center, spa and rehabilitation center, an hour drive away from La Torre. What amazes us is that the baths of Casciana are a historic site and they were constructed in 1870 by the architect Poggi, later renewed to how it is today. It is based in the beautiful Tuscan countryside which we adore as it is surrounded by olive trees and vineyards, allowing us to absorb the relaxing connection to nature and aura of serenity.
The terme has three pools, ‘powered by thermal water’, one for motor rehabilitation, one is a salt pool (not powered by the thermal water) used in the ‘Villa Borri Spa route’ that consists of emotional showers, a steam room, jacuzzis and geysers, the third and our most preferred pool is an outdoor pool surrounded by the spa’s greenery. We tried two of the pools as we are not in need of motor rehabilitation, however we admire the idea of it and agreed that it is a wonderful and life changing feature to have at a spa, if we are ever in need one day of motor rehabilitation we will definitely take a visit at this spa as the staff were very polite and professional, they seemed to cherish their work in helping others.
The Outdoor Bathing Pool
The outdoor pool is ‘powered by thermal water with continuous replacement’, as it flows from a natural spring, the water is called ‘Mathelda Water’ and has a temperature of 35.7°C which kept us feeling warm and helped our muscles as well as bones relieve tension and stiffness. The hot spring had fun water features such as a jacuzzi, waterfalls, swan necks and geysers, they were genuinely enjoyable, unwinding and aesthetically pleasing helping to relax our minds. The swan necks were our favourite water feature as they flooded water onto our shoulders and back at a medium-high pressure massaging these spots and softening our muscles.
The Salt Pool
The Salt pool is indoors, the staff explained some benefits of the salt pool being: a gentle disinfectant for the skin therefore cleansing it, improving the immune system and relieving pain and inflammation. Scott had cut his finger quite deeply early in the morning, when we dipped into the salt pool his finger stopped throbbing, although initially it stung lightly, the water acted as pain relief. The atmosphere inside the spa was softening, however outside we felt was more unique and serene due to the surrounding view of nature and the horizon of the Tuscan countryside.
The Gardens
When not bathing in the luxurious pools, you can relax in the charming gardens, either on a sun bed or lying on the grass, it was really unwinding to absorb some sun after a nice theraputic swim. Next time we take a visit to the Terme of Casciana, we will bring a picnic along to snack on whilst chilling in the garden, something Tuscan like pecorino and pears or salami and ham with freshly baked bread! That way we can dip in and out of the pool when feeling too hot under the sun and deinitely set the mood for relaxing in the at a spa in the middle of the Tuscan countryside!
Overall
The ‘Terme di Casciana’ was easy to get to using the ‘Superstrada’ (clearway) called FI-PI-LI (a road connecting three major cities in Italy, Florence, Pisa and Livorno), there was free parking upon arrival which was convenient. There are a few sessions throughout the day (mostly around 4 hours each) and at the end of the session everyone has to leave, whilst they clean to get ready for the next session. It's important to check this in advance, as if you arrive mid session, then you pay the full amount, but don't get too long. Its worth to take a picnic, that you can enjoy on the grass in an afternoon under the sun, whilst dipping in and out of the pools.
The staff were considerate and courteous, not only by giving us a tour of the site but really explaining about the facilities and its history. Mentioning the facilities, they were very clean, relaxing and enjoyable to use, our time there was most certainly worthwhile and we recommend this terme for a calming day out! The price ranges from 18-55 euros depending whether you bring a bathrobe, swimming cap and slippers, these three elements are required in almost all spas and swimming pools in Italy for hygiene reasons.
